Gooseberry Barn - Holmesfield, Derbyshire

“A beautiful, beautiful cottage. Will highly recommend...” "Gooseberry Barn was far more than we could have wished for ...”

At the gateway to the Peak District, Gooseberry Barn is a fabulous, single storey, 2 bedroomed, 2 bathroomed self catering cottage. Gooseberry Barn is finished to a very high standard and retains many of the original features, including king post trusses and exposed stonework. The Barn benefits from being all on one level, with underfloor heating throughout.

The lounge has a Clearview wood burning stove, oak shutters and large picture window which looks out onto the cobbled courtyard. The double aspect dining kitchen has oak units with electric hob and oven, fridge/freezer, dishwasher, washer and microwave. The dining table by the window seats four.

There are two excellent double en-suite bedrooms. The first has a king-size bed and bathroom with a Victorian roll-top bath with shower over, wash basin and toilet. The second has two single beds and bathroom, with walk-in shower, hand basin and toilet. Both bedrooms and lounge have flat screen TV's, with Sky and DVD in the lounge. Two of the TVs have Freeview. The barn also benefits from wireless internet access. Fabrics, furnishings and fittings have been carefully co-ordinated throughout, with limestone-effect solid floors and occasional rugs.

Gooseberry Barn has its own private courtyard at the front with table and chairs and southerly aspect. If you prefer, take a short walk to your own separate seating area where you can enjoy the views of the surrounding countryside. Alternatively, take a walk in the 30 plus acres of the estate and enjoy watching the horses. At dusk you may be fortunate enough to see the badgers.

There is private parking for several cars as well as storage for cycles. Country walks are on your doorstep, straight from the barn.

Location of Gooseberry Barn

Gooseberry Barn self catering cottage is on the outskirts of the small Derbyshire village of Holmesfield with its historic church and several pubs serving good food all within circa. 1 mile. This barn is ideally placed at the gateway to the Peak District National Park, with the historic country houses of Chatsworth and Haddon Hall and their parklands only a short drive away. It is also within easy reach of the market towns of Bakewell and Chesterfield (the latter with its famous crooked spire) plus the delightful village of Baslow. All have a host of excellent shops, pubs, cafes and restaurants (at least one with a Michelin star!)

For lovers of the outdoors, the area has everything from walking to cycling, climbing, fishing, horse-riding, caving and much more! Miles of cycle trails can be explored on foot or bicycle (cycle hire available locally or bring your own).

The White Peak is within easy reach, as are the caves of Castleton (home of the 'Mighty Titan' - the largest cave in the United Kingdom), the cable cars of Matlock, the thrills of Alton towers and the tranquillity and breath-taking scenery surrounding the Derwent Dams where the famous 617 Dambusters' squadron practised the dams' raids (still commemorated with annual fly-past).

Meadowhall, one of the largest shopping centres in the country, is within half an hour drive, as are the theatres and attractions of Sheffield city centre.

What you may like/ what you may not like about Gooseberry Barn:

Some of what you may like:
The standard of accommodation: Our accommodation aims to please with lovely lounge with log burner and picture window, both bedrooms with en suite facilities including roll-top bath with shower in one bathroom and walk-in shower in the other. The floors are tiled (so nice and clean) with occasional rugs and of course under-floor heating throughout and the double aspect dining kitchen is very well fitted, with electric hob/oven, washer, dishwasher, microwave and fridge freezer.

TVs and WiFi:
The barn has TVs in the lounge and both bedrooms and has Sky TV including Movies and Sport. There is WiFi throughout.

Private Parking:
There is ample parking for at least two vehicles and your entrance has electrically controlled gate access.

Walks from your doorstep / enjoying the wildlife:
There are lovely walks from your doorstep and you are able to enjoy walking in the owners 30+ acres with the potential for viewing of all manner of wildlife including badgers, foxes and owls.

Your own courtyard and separate seating/viewing area:
The Barn has its own courtyard which gets the sun (when around) for most of the day). Additionally, there is a separate seating area if you want to view the surrounding countryside.

The location:
Gooseberry Barn is ideally placed to visit all that the Peak District and Derbyshire has to offer. It is only 4 miles to Chatsworth and from there a short distance to either Bakewell or Matlock. The pretty villages of Baslow, Hathersage, Castleton and Eyam to name but a few are all within very easy commuting (no more than 1/2 hr to any of them) as is the market town of Chesterfield and the vibrant city of Sheffield (or even the fantastic shopping at Meadowhall).

There are numerous excellent eating establishments within easy commuting of the barn, with the nearest pub serving food being circa 500 metres away.

Read our 'Guest Comments' to see what they loved about Gooseberry Barn. We have many guests who come back time and time again because they love the Barn.

What you may not like about Gooseberry Barn:

Pets/Smoking: Really sorry, but our cottages are strictly for non smokers and we do not take pets. (In fact, it is worth mentioning that whilst we love children, we do not welcome unruly, 'wrecker' children either!)

Location:
Most of the houses of Holmesfield are situated on the B6054 which is one of the country roads out into Derbyshire and the barn is no different. The road is the other side of the stone wall to the courtyard, screened by the stone wall and huge conifers. It can get busy, particularly at weekends as traffic goes out into Derbyshire. It is also quite a 'horsey' area, so you will see quite a few horse riders using the road.

Other than that we struggle to see anything that you may not like and indeed very, very rarely have we received any negative comment in the years we have been renting Gooseberry Barn. Indeed, what we generally receive is great feedback - evidenced by the number of people who rebook (and often as they leave!)
